The Top Sports Teams at Harvard

Harvard is no doubt one of the best universities in the world. Its alumni are among the notable names in society and being a student in this great university is an honor. This university does not only build its students academically but also athletically. Here are some of the top sports teams in Harvard.

The Baseball Team

The baseball team is one of Harvard’s best sports teams. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this team has been a member of the Ivy League conference since 1993 when the conference started hosting baseball. The team’s home ground is Joseph J. O’Donnell Field. The current head coach of the team is Bill Decker after taking over in the 2013 season.

Ever since its formation, this baseball team has appeared in 14 NCAA Tournaments and four College World Series. It has won 12 Ivy League regular season titles, 15 EIBL regular season titles, eight Rolfe Division titles, and five Ivy League Championship Series. This team has also seen twelve of its former players appear in Major League Baseball as from the start of the 2014 Major League Baseball season.

The Women’s Ice Hockey Team

Arguably the best sports team in Harvard, the women’s ice hockey team currently represents the varsity in the Division I women’s hockey tournament of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This team plays its home games at the Bright Hockey Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts and competes as a member of the ECAC Conference.

The team has the following championships under its belt:

– Also, the team has been crowned 6 times as the women’s regular season ECAC champions; in 1999, 03-05, 08, and 2015.

The Ice Hockey Team (Men)

This sports team is another great one from Harvard. It takes part in the Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ice hockey tournament and is also an ECAC Hockey member. This team played its first game on January 19, 1898, making it one of the oldest ice hockey college teams in the United States. In this game, they played against Brown where they lost 0-6. The archrival of this team is Cornell Big Red. For this reason, both teams meet for installments of the historic Cornell-Harvard hockey rivalry at least twice each season.

The championships that they have won include:

– A NCAA men’s championship in 1989.

– Men’s ECAC champions 8 times in 1963, 71, 83, 87, 94, 02, 04, 06, and 2015.

– Men’s regular-season ECAC champions in 1963, 73, 75, 86-89, and 92-94.

Men’s Basketball Team

The Harvard Crimson men’s basketball team is another top sports team in this varsity. This team currently competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in Division I for Ivy League institutions. In 2014, the team appeared in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In this tournament, they played with Cincinnati where they were defeated 61-57. They were later eliminated by Michigan State in the round of 32 by a score of 80-73.

Among their greatest achievements is the defeat of Yale during their playoff held on March 14, 2015, at the Palestra in Philadelphia by 53-51. This was the first time in 53 years that Harvard prevented Yale from reaching the NCAA Tournament. UNC, however, eliminated them from the tournament by a score of 67-65. Their current coach is Tommy Amaker.

Harvard is not only great in academics but also in sports. These are some of its top sports teams.
